Worka Chelbessa Washing Station | Gedeb, Ethiopia

Coffee Rooted in Community and Place

In the southern reaches of Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone, the community of Worka Chelbessa has become known for producing some of the country’s most exceptional specialty coffees.

Located in the Gedeb district, an area recognised for its high elevations, fertile soils, and ideal coffee-growing conditions, Worka Chelbessa has developed a reputation for producing coffees with remarkable clarity, sweetness, and complexity.

This potential is what attracted coffee producer Neguesse Debela, who chose Worka Chelbessa as one of the first locations for his coffee journey. Recognising the unique character of the region and the dedication of the local farming communities, Neguesse began investing in infrastructure that would allow these coffees to reach their full potential.

Building Quality Through Careful Processing

In 2017, Neguesse established his first coffee processing site in Worka Chelbessa. Two years later, he expanded his work by acquiring an additional washing station in the nearby sub-area of Danche.

Today, Neguesse and his team produce both washed and natural processed coffees across these stations, with a focus on precision, experimentation, and continuous improvement.

Their approach combines respect for traditional Ethiopian coffee practices with a willingness to explore new techniques. Through carefully developed processing methods and experimental lots, the team continues to learn how different decisions can influence flavour, quality, and consistency.

The result is coffees that express the unique identity of Gedeb—vibrant, floral, complex, and deeply connected to their place of origin.

The Character of Gedeb

Gedeb represents a newer chapter in Ethiopia’s coffee story.

While areas such as Yirgacheffe have long been recognised globally for their washed coffees and delicate floral profiles, Gedeb has emerged as a region with its own distinctive identity. Many coffee farms in the area have been cultivated for only one or two generations, creating an exciting opportunity for producers and farmers to continue developing the region’s specialty coffee potential.

The high elevations of Gedeb, combined with generations of farming knowledge and careful processing, create the conditions for exceptional coffees.

In communities such as Worka Chelbessa, coffee is grown by smallholder farmers who carefully cultivate their land, often at elevations exceeding 2,000 metres above sea level. Their dedication, combined with the work of producers and washing station teams, creates coffees that reflect both the landscape and the people behind them.
