Sumatra Lintong Raja Batak comes from carefully selected smallholder farmers around the town of Lintongnihuta in the Northern Sumatra Province (Provinsi Sumatera Utara). This region lies along the southern shores of Lake Toba - the world’s largest volcanic lake. The rich volcanic soil and high elevation provide ideal conditions for cultivating exceptional coffee. The town of Lintongnihuta sits on a plateau ranging from 1,000 to 1,300 meters above sea level.
Our partner farmers manage small plantations of two to four hectares, each with about 1,000 coffee trees per hectare. These farmers grow, harvest, and depulp the coffee on their farms. After de pulping, the coffee is left to ferment overnight, then washed the following day. The parchment coffee is briefly dried to reduce surface moisture before being delivered to our production facility.
At the milling facility, they carefully inspect the coffee to ensure it exceeds our quality standards. Coffees that do not meet these standards are not purchased. Approved lots are placed in greenhouses for drying to about 40% moisture, then hulled, and returned to the greenhouse for further drying.
Once the coffee reaches a moisture content of 12–13%, it is transported to our warehouse in Medan, where it is inspected and graded again to confirm consistent quality. The coffee is then rested for two months before a final grading. During this final stage, the beans are hand-sorted, and finally bagged for export.
