Ayele Tulu is a dedicated coffee producer and a proud father of three from the captivating Sidamo Bona Zuria region. His journey in coffee cultivation began in the 1980s when he inherited a piece of land from his father, sparking a lifelong passion for growing exceptional coffee. Today, his farm is recognized as a ‘model farm,’ admired by the local Cooperative for its commitment to best practices in cultivation and harvesting.
Located within the Demeka Becha site, Ayele’s farm serves as a central hub, sourcing cherries from neighboring communities such as Dilla Suke, Demeka, Gowacho, Becha, and Bashiro Dale. This network, comprising nearly 10,000 producers, reflects the widespread impact of Ayele’s dedication to quality coffee.
At the heart of operations, a distinctive teal scale meticulously records the weight of each batch of cherries upon arrival—a process overseen by the observant Cashier and General Manager, Alemu Gobaro. Before processing, the cherries undergo a careful floating selection to ensure only the best are chosen. They are then laid out in thin layers under the sun, preserving their rich flavors.
Ayele employs traditional yet effective drying methods using African raised beds, which promote even airflow and prevent mold, fermentation, or rot. The cherries are turned regularly and shade-dried for 14 to 21 days before being transferred to a secure storehouse. From there, they are transported to Addis Ababa for final processing, ensuring that every bean carries the legacy of Ayele’s craftsmanship and passion.
